The use of strong oxidants such as chlorine, chloramines, and ozone to disinfect d​rinking water has virtually eliminated waterborne diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and dysentery in developed countries. However, research has shown that chlorine interacts with natural organic matter present in drinking water supplies to form disinfection by-products (DBPs​).
